Imperfect love from people

What is love. We all know that we are supposed to love one another. We need to love God. We have seen the look of love that a baby gives you. What is love. Does love comes naturally or we are taught how to love. There are definitions of love in the dictionary. Who looks into a dictionary to know how to love your better half, or to love your parent or your children. We normally don’t think about the source of where we get love from. It just happens. Lets look in the Bible. The bible has definitions of faith, hope and otherparts of our personality.

Love is there if you look hard. In Genesis, we are told that we are made in the image of God. God is love. This means love is part of our makeup. Why do people say that they fall out of love. Why that sometimes our view of love becomes distorted. Love making is another word for having sex between two people. True love is the love between two people with God as the center. It is so easy to be distracted. Just living our life we are distracted from what love is. We can get annoyed by other people. That should not stop us from love for us other or by our significant other. We can be aggravated with each other and give our life for each other. Remember love God first and from that love each other.

The crisis of Matthew

Matthew 9:9

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

My pastor was giving a sermon based on this verse and my thoughts regarded this verse went into overload. What kind of person is Matthew. Very little is discussed about Matthew except that he is a tax collector. When he left his job was a huge step. No doubt that he was with someone else to ensure the money he had already was collected would not be stolen. There was at the very least a soldier there to protect Rome’s taxes. That man no doubt would have yelled at Matthew not to go and threaten Matthew if he left the job. If Matthew was able to walk off, other Tax Collectors would be tempted to also walk from their job. Being a tax collector was a very lucrative job, but they gained no respect from their fellow Israelites or the Romans. It was a lonely job. The Romans would demand retribution from a tax collector that stepped away from his job and no longer would collect money for the Romans. He could be flogged or other means of punishment. The Romans were so good in torturing people that defied them.

It was considered a tribute to be asked by a spiritual leader to be his student. However Jesus was considered by many to be leader of a cult. Matthew was sticking his neck out to leave the Roman employment to be part of a cult that was neither in line with the Romans or the Israelites spiritual leaders. No doubt he had heard of Jesus from his friends and from his reputation

Romans 9:10-13

And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”

After he drop everything to follow Jesus, Matthew called over his friends, fellow tax collectors, for a party so they can meet Jesus. Along with them came Pharisees. This has to be a tense time for Matthew. What would you say to a fellow worker that walked off the job to follow what was considered a cult leader at that time. Would you go to a party so you could talk him out of what he did and go back to being a tax collecter. Would you go

One final thought. The Gospel of Matthew calls his previous job as a sinful duty more than the other Gospels. This could be that Matthew was asking for absolution because he felt guilty of what he did as a tax collector. It is similar as Paul called himself the least of the Apostles even as he traveled throughout the Roman Empire to spread the Gospel.

What is Love – Part 4

Mat 22:40  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Jesus said this immediately after he said the two most important commandments was to love God and to love others.  This statement completes what was said.  The Bible contains the law and is completely written by Prophets.  So if somebody is trying to tell you something based on the Bible and it doesn’t contain love, then the person telling you this is a false teacher.  If you hear a sermon without love, then he is a false preacher.  Love has to be the basis for all activities centered around the Bible.

This should be a test indicating that it is a true message or not.  The other dimension of this statement is that you need to know what love is and what it is not.  Examples of this is

  1.  Accountability could either be an act of love or a means of controlling people.
  2. Criticism can either be an act of love or be frustrating to the other person.
  3.  There are other examples where the person you are associating with might have good intentions but results are harmful.

This is a short list on where using love with the right motives may be This part of the commandments require a special discernment from God to truly understand what this part of the commandment means.  When people try to teach you something or with your interactions with other people one needs direction and discernment from God.  The God of truth and love will tell you how true the message is.  He gives you discernment or place someone around you that can discern.

That is the final concept that I want to look at.  It is our interactions with other people which demonstrates our capacity to love.  To love God and to love others is hard to do.  It is especially hard to put on paper.  How do we do this when you can’t see him.  How do you love others when you see so much is wrong with them and they just irritate you.  Reading scripture and following  their advice is a good start.  Praying so be able to see is what God sees and to get God thoughts in you is a great start.  Reading God’s word is another part of the process.  Our interaction with people is the activity which requires the most repentance.

Just like every other part of this discussion of what love is, my mind is limited.  I don’t have all the answers or even all the questions.  It is important for each person to meditate on the different aspects of God’s love with respect to yourself.  Each person needs to spend time establishing your own relationship with God and with each other.  I would like to do that, but I can’t.  Whoops, I need to repent of that.

What is Love – Part 2

LOVING GOD
Mat 22:37 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

How can we do this? No matter how strong our love is there is a voice inside us that says we can do better. How much love is enough? When can we be confident when we know God is looking at us and we know He is smiling?

These are hard questions especially when one wants to know much is needed to please God.  One can answer these questions by saying that God knows our heart. He knows what we want our self to be like. He knows that our desire is to be close to him and to please Him.  What can we do to show God what we want more than anything in the world is to please him?

All to often we think of God waiting in the sidelines to catch us messing up.  This is not God at all.  Have you ever had a parent or a mentor or someone else who you enjoy being with.  These people give you limits.  When you go beyond those limits, they become stern.  You feel as if you are separated from them.    You feel distraught.  What is really happening is that authoritative figure is waiting for you to perform an action to eliminate that separation between him or her and yourself.  Sometimes the authoritative figure will make the first move.  God is that authoritative figure.  He loved you so much that he gave his only Son to be that sacrifice to unite you and God.  Sometimes now God wants to hear you repent.  Repentance does not only take away that division between you and God, but also makes you feel better about yourself.

Another way is to ask God to give us the ability to love him the way he deserves to be loved.  This goes against our human nature.  We want to do things our self using our own ability.  Look through the Bible.  God asks us to do many things.  God also shows us that he will help us in our actions when we allow God to participate.  The ancient Christian writers called this passive actions and active actions.   Active means our actions.  Passive means what we allow God to participate.  When we are spirit led, there are both active and passive actions that act together in sequence with one another.

To love God with all our might, we must be aware of his continual presence.  That doesn’t mean that one has to feel his presence, but just the knowledge that the presence of God is with you.  When you wake up in the morning, ask God what his plans are for you today.  He might tell you or he might not.  Just go on with the days business.  Thank God when events happen in your life whether good or bad .  Remember God is with you no matter what.  Enjoy him always.

Just like I said in previous essays, God treats us both as individuals and as a group.  Your experiences with God is different than mine.  My goal is to stimulate you in contemplating all the ways God showed his love towards you.  Enjoy His presence.

A Gay Time (part 2)

It has been two years since that Mary had that dream of her Aunt with Jesus calling for her.  That dream changed her life.  So much has happen since then.  Mary and Helen has met Elizabeth.  Elizabeth was about 40 years older  with strong Christian beliefs.  Who would of guess that Mary and Helen , a lesbian couple, would enjoy having tea with and talking with someone who had a completely different lifestyle to them. It was recipical.  She felt the same as Mary and Helen did.  They looked forward to every Sunday afternoon meeting together and enjoying each other company. They would start the afternoon together eating a light snack with some tea. They would joke about what happened to them that week. They also talked about how God was part of their life.  Sometimes if something bad happened to one the others would give that person some empathy and encouragement. They could talk about anything and not be afraid of what someone would think.

Mary and Helen went to church every Sunday and participated in many of the activities such as soup kitchen, giving out clothes to the needy and Bible study to name a few. Although they were gay, many people were able to put aside their bias and accept them. Some could not go beyond their bias. These people mainly ignored Helen and Mary.

It was evening.  Both were relaxing doing their favorite activities.  Mary was knitting and Helen was putting together her puzzle.  The room was so quiet that you can hear a caterpillar walk across the room.  Mary’s cell phone rang and startled both of them.  Mary took the phone out of her purse and answered it with a “Hello”.

She continued talking.  “Yes, this is Mary.  Helen is here also.  Do you want to speak to her also. ”  All of a sudden her voice panicked.  “Oh no,  Is she all right.  What happened.”  Her voice calmed down and she regained her composure.  “Alright we will come right over.  Thank you for notifying us.”

Helen looked at Mary confused.  “What was that all about?” asked Helen.

Mary responded as she go Helen’s jacket and gave it to her and put on her own jacket, “Elizabeth just had a heart attack and is in the hospital. ”

“We got to go!”  said Helen alarmingly.

They left immediately, went into the car and drove to the hospital.  They went to the receptionist and asked what room Elizabeth was in .  The receptionist told them.  They started going into the room when they were stopped.

A nurse was controlling the people going into the room.

“Are you family,” she asked.

Helen responded, “No.  We are Helen and Mary.  Someone from the hospital called for us to come here.”

“Oh you are the people she is asking for.  Go on in.  Make sure she remains quiet,” said the nurse authoritatively.

They entered the room.  They did the best they could to hold back their emotions.  They were used  to see a person with lots of energy, so dignified and so alert.  Now she was laying down in bed with tubes coming out of her and wires going to an electric panel beeping.  Her face looked pail and hair unkempt.

“Hi girls.  I’m glad to see you.  I need to talk to you.  I want both of you know that I don’t have much longer to last in this world and go to a better place.  I have updated my will and put both of you as part of it.  You made an old lady very happy.  There is one more thing.   Both of you need to talk.  You both have issues that you need to talk about it with each other.   I don’t want either to fret,” said Elizabeth.

The nurse came in and said, “We need some privacy.  The sheets need to be changed.”

Helen and Mary left and went to the cafeteria.  They both stared each other wondering what the other had to say to them.  They got their food and sat down at a convenient table.

Both women started to talk small talk to each other like how Elizabeth looked and they both were sad that a normally vigorous woman seems so tired.  Both of them could not get it past them what Elizabeth said about each one having something to say about the other.  They knew in the past that they could say anything to each other.  Why the change.

Helen said to Mary, “What is it that you need to say to me?”

Mary said, “You first.”

Helen said, “I insist you start.”

Mary started.  Her face looked like someone was pulling out her fingernails, “Helen.  I owe some much to you.  You got me off drugs.  You healed me from that abuse I received while growing up.  If it wasn’t for you, I probably be dead right know.”

Helen interrupted, “Alright already.  I already know that I am up for saint of the year.  Please get to the point.”

Mary continued, “I know I can draw things out too much.  Here it is.  My feelings have been changing.  I have been looking at women with a child and a husband and feeling envious.  My body clock is running out and I have been wanting a child.”

Helen smiled.  Mary thought Helen was going to be angry.

Helen responded, “I knew that.  You think after all these years you can keep something from me.  I’ve learned to read you like a book.  I’ve seen the way you’ve been looking at babies.  My fear is that you might want to adopt a child with me.   I’m not ready.  Listen to what I need to tell you.  I grew up in a Christian family.  In church, I used to listen intently those people that ministered to people in the inner city and dreamt that I was one.  That was what I wanted to do when I grew up.  When I got older and found out that I was a lesbian the dreams ended.  My father kicked me out of the house and was ostracized for my sexual preference.  Talking to Elizabeth these last few years stirred up my childhood dreams.  This is what I wanted to tell you but I was afraid.”

Mary said, Well we know what to do.  They got up and hugged one another and went to Elizabeth’s room.  They told Elizabeth what happened at the cafeteria.  Elizabeth smiled and fell asleep.

Both Mary and Helen went home.  Soon after they got home, they received a telephone call.

Mary picked up the phone.  “Elizabeth just passed away.” said the voice on they other end of the phone.

“Is there anything we can do?” Mary asked.

“No.  Everything is set in motion.  The body is being sent to the Randolph funeral home.  You can call them when he is ready for viewing.  We called the next of kin.  He is coming from California.”  , said the voice on the phone.

“Thank you,” said Mary.

“Good bye,” said the voice.

“Bye,” said Mary and hung up the phone.  She developed a blanked stare.  She started crying.  Helen knew what said and started crying also.  Both were quiet.  Only sobbing could be heard.  They both hugged each other trying to comfort one another for hours.

The next day they regained their composure.  “This doesn’t seem real”, said Helen.  “I feel I can go over to her house see her smile and share some tea and cookies.”

Mary said, “I feel the same.  It was the highlight of my week to get together.”

The week went by quickly.  The wake and the funeral went by quickly.  It seemed so final when the son took a shovel of dirt and put the symbolic dirt on the casket.  The son still had a close friend in town.  That is where they had the get together so people can have final closure.  Helen and Mary did not know anyone so they talked politely to a few people and left.

They got home and pour a glass of wine.  They talk for a few minutes on the funeral.  Helen then said, “I’m giving my notice this week.  What do you want to do about the apartment and more important how are you holding up?”

“Four years ago I would have been a complete wreck and could not handle it.  You and Elizabeth gave me the necessary tools to continue sanely.  Things will be a little tight, but I will be fine.  Please don’t worry about me.  You have a dream to fulfill, responded Mary.

Helen retorted, “You’ve always been a good friend and I’m going to miss you. ”

They both finished their glass of wine and fell asleep.

The time went by and Helen was ready to leave.  They both were quiet.  When Helen went for her final trip to the car, they both hugged each other.  They both had tears fall down their cheeks.

Mary asked, “What now?”

“I have some relationships to repair.  When I was kicked out of the house, the relationship between me and my family was destroyed.  I need to repair it,” answered Helen.

“May God be with you,” said  Mary.  Mary stayed outside and watched Helen drive away.  She felt empty but knew this had to happen.

Helen drove the car heading for her childhood home.  Inside her had emotions tearing her apart.  She left the comfort of her home.  Who knows how her parents are going to treat her when she gets there.  She knew that this had to be done before she does the work in the city.

She got to the start of the driveway and stopped.  She took a deep breath and then drove up the driveway.  She got out of the car, walked up the driveway and knocked on the door. Her mother opened the door.  She didn’t immediately recognize her daughter and said, “Can I help you?”

Helen responded, “Mom……”

A light went off in her mother’s head.  “Helen!”  She reached out and hugged Helen.  The hug seemed never ending and strong enough to cut out blood circulation.  Helen’s mother said, “It is so good to see you after all these years.  We need to get your father.”

Helen gave a nervous laugh.  “It was my father who kicked me out of the house and told the church what happened so they would would no longer accept me.”

Helen’s mother said, “I know.  He was caught off guard.  He would never guess that this would happen.  After all you went with a boy to the senior prom.  There was nothing to prepare us for your confession.  We did the best we could with what we knew.  All I know is that your Father has not been the same since you left.  If was like something inside him disappeared and he has not been complete since then.  I think I hear your Father.”

Panic set in to Helen.  She had rehearsed everything see wanted to say.  She forgot everything.

Her Father opened the door and entered the house.  He saw Helen and asked, “Who is this?”  He was not expecting to see his daughter after all these years.

“It’s Helen!,” said her Mother.

Helen felt like a little girl and responded, “Yes daddy, it’s me.”

Her father then said rudely, “What do you want?  Did your girly friend leave you and you are running back to mommy and daddy.  Well we are not here to comfort you for something like this.”

“We decided together to go our own ways.  The way I left has been bothering me for a long time and I wanted to settle it, Helen responded.

Helen’s mother asked, “Where are you staying?”

“I was going to check in to a hotel,” said Helen.

“No.  You are staying here!  We still have your room available.  That’s is where you are staying,” said Helen’s mother.

“Alright.  I need to get my clothes,” said Helen.

Helen’s father said, “I’ll help.”

Helen looked at her father.  She didn’t think that she would get the response like this.  They went down and got her clothes out of her  car and brought the clothes up to her room.

Helen and her parents that week what they could to heal their relationship.  The first part of the week there was a lot of quietness.  What was said was tense and polite.  As the days continued the laughter began.  There was more light talk between them.

Her father during the week asked Helen, “You have always been goal oriented.  What your plans.”

Helen responded, “You know me.  You’re right.  When I was growing up, I heard those speakers talk about their time in the big city helping people.  That is what I want to do.  I am not looking for a relationship if that is what you are thinking.”

Her father responded “Well kind of.  Not really.  This past week has been the best week of my life.”

Helen continued to live there.  After a while she said to herself, “It’s time for me to go.  I am enjoying myself so much.  If I continue, I will have too much of a good thing.”

Helen and her parents sat down for breakfast.  Mary said, “As much as I want to stay, I need to continue on.  I am going to the big city.”

“I knew this was happening soon,” said Helen’s father.  He went into the next room and brought out a card and gave it to Helen.  He continued, “Here is you point of contact when you get to the big city.  I already called him saying you will be coming soon.  He’s ready for you.”

Helen looked at her father unbelievable and went to him and said “Thank you daddy.  You are the best.”

Helen stayed for a few more days, packed her clothes and took the suitcases to the car.

She went to her parents to tell them goodbye.  Without having to say a word they looked at each other.  Helen did not have to say a word.  All of a sudden there was a lot of hugging and kissing and crying.  Helen tore herself away and went to the car.

Helen’s father said, “I want you to not make yourself a stranger.  Come back as often as you can.”

Helen responded, “I had the best of time visiting.  I’ll be back.”

Helen got into the car and drove off, ready for her next stage of life.

Six  years went by.  Helen and Mary are fully situated in their new lives.

Mary is now married to a fireman who adores her.  They have a 3 year old child and thinking of having another one.  They own a nice house on a hill.  Looking at them now you see them rolling down the hill and laughing.  Her dream has been fulfilled.

Helen is still in the big city.  She is enjoying her life though all the good and bad times.  It is break time and she is sitting down with a co-worker.  She was thinking about the next duty.  The co-worker saw Helen and said, “You’re Helen, aren’t you.”

Helen responded with curiosity, “Yes, I am. Why?”

“I have heard so much about you,” said the co-worker.  “I heard you re a lesbian.”

Helen said to him, “My life is not about sexuality.  My purpose is on the streets.”

The co-worker continued, “I’ve heard people talk about you.  You have a certain mythology about you.”

Helen has heard it all before and did not want to her it again.  She know it was not her but God working in her life.  She responded saying, “Don’t believe everything you hear.”

The co-worker said, “Are you trying to tell me that there was a time you got in the middle of a gang fight.   He would have shot you to get at him. The gang tried to shoot another gang member anyways and the gun jammed.  He tried to shoot again and the gun still did not go off.  He pointed the gun upwards and then the gun shot in the air.  There was no explanation for this.  There was another time where someone tried to kill you because you were interfering too much.  He raised his knife, ready to kill you when he collapsed on his knees sobbing.  There was another time you and other people were setting up tables to feed the homeless.  They knew there was not enough food to go around, but you did it anyways.  Somehow there was food to feed anyways.  When the food was gone the people were filled.”

Helen responded, “It’s not me but its God.  We are limited but my belief in God increases my limitations..  Are you ready to believe?”

Her co-worker responded saying, “No I’m not.  I may in the future.”

The break was over and both went off in the streets ready for whatever happens to them.

Different level of the Bible

Do you ever wonder why some people can read the Bible over and over and never get tired of reading it.  They read the Bible two, three or more times and can’t wait to get started again.  It is because we have a God that makes us hungry for what the Bible has to offer.  Another reason is that there are many levels of understanding.  None of these levels are more important than the other level.  he levels are just different.  I have a list.  There may be more levels.  Here are the levels that I can think of now.

One level is to read the Bible as a novel.  The writing style is so rich.  The poetry is studied by both Christians and non Christians for its style.  This is why there are college courses in studying the Bible as literature.  Reading the Bible as prose or poetry is a truly rich rewarding experience.

Another level is reading the Bible as a  daily devotional.  There are so many varieties.  One is where you read the Bible in a single year.  Others is when they provide a verse or two and they talk about it.  The purpose of this style of reading is that this gives you a focus for the day.  Through this one learns about the Bible a little at a time,  This gives you a positive point of way of looking at things to counter the negativity we get through television, other media, from yourself or even from each other.

Still another level of ingesting the Bible is through a sermon.  The pastor, priest or a knowledgeable person will usually introduce a passage or several passages of the Bible as part of the sermon.  He will provide an explanation along with a life lesson based on his background and education.

Still another way that was used commonly in the first two or three centuries is call Lectio Divina or divine reading.  The original purpose was to ensure the people who could not read would at least hear and be able to talk on the different scriptures.  A group of people would get together.  One would read the scripture.  Then they all would pray about it asking from God further clarification.  A short sermon would be preached.  Then the people would sit around in an open forum to discuss the scripture.  This process is not strict in format.  For instance the steps could be performed in a different order or a step may be performed twice.  The intent is to have an encounter with God as a group and to develop a better understanding of scripture.

Another process is Bible study.  The Bible study may consists of a topic where one goes from scripture to scripture finding out the overall interpretation on what the Bible stands for.  The other way Bible study is presented is by studying one of the 66 Books in the Bible.  This way one learns why a passage of the Bible is place there and  how the adjacent passages explain the scripture more thoroughly.   This usually includes several students having a group discussion and a knowledgeable person running the discussion.

Still another level of learning the Bible is through meditation.  Many people when meditating will have on hand a Bible, Bible dictionary, a pen and a  piece of  paper to write down any inspiring revelations one might receive.  You sit down using good posture (I have fallen asleep more times than I would like to admit).

The last means of knowing the Bible is through contemplation.  This is not recognized by many Christians nowadays as a separate way of learning .  Usually contemplation and meditation are described as interchangeable words.  The true sense of the words they are not.  In meditation you invite God to be in our focus.  In contemplation God is inviting you in.  When reading the old church leaders would call it “prayer without words”.  No words need to be said.  Sometimes more can be said without words.  It does help to have a strong knowledge of scripture but not necessary.  The knowledge of scripture is needed to keep you straight ahead -not to the left or right.   It is usually an interchange of love where God is showing you His love and he is giving you the capacity to show God the type of love he deserves.

This is a very abbreviated list of ways to read the Bible.  Whole books have been written on technique and experiences while diving into the Bible.  I did not reveal my experience  with the scriptures.  I would be glad to interchange experiences with different people.  Remember there is no way one can separate Jesus from God the Father.  They are two persons of the same God.  Also it is impossible to separate scripture from Jesus.  Just read chapter one of the book of John.  That means as you get closer to scripture you get closer to God.

An Afternoon Gift

Rainbows means much to me. I read about it after the great flood. A rainbow was a reminder to Noah about the covenant that God was establishing. A rainbow reminds me of the love God has for me. This afternoon I had completed walking with my wife for 2 hours and was getting ready for a concert that night. I looked up the sky was clear except for a few clouds. One of the clouds was particularly bright. Through that cloud was a rainbow. I looked at it for a while and thanked God for several minutes on how much God loves me.

Christian Faith

Anyone who has read the Bible know what faith is.  A good definition  is in Hebrews 11:1.  It reads like this

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

We know how much God desires that we have faith from Hebrews 11:6.  That verse reads as follows.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him q must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Pleasing God should be our number one priority.  How does it feel to us  when we exercise our faith especially when we are out of our comfort zone.  When we exercise our faith It is like a piece of silk rubbing against our skin.  It feels good.  When we stop exercising our faith it is like that cloth not rubbing anymore.  You feel the cloth for a while.  After a short time you stop feeling the cloth but like God it is still touching you.

That is similar to exercising our faith not only to please God but our self gets pleasure also.

Worship and the ocean

Over the summer I was taking a walk down by the ocean and I experienced a marvelous event. There was good size waves. A slight breeze was caressing my face. I felt the warmth of the sun. The ocean smells were invigorating. I looked in the ocean and saw small fish along with seaweed going in flow with the waves. Sand pipers were running back and forth with the waves on the beach. There was God’s creation worshipping God the way they were created. What was extraordinary is that God’s creation was inviting me to be part of their worship. That is awesome.
