Showing humility is probably the hardest thing to do. It is easy to show false humility. It is easy to exaggerate our good points. What does it look like to show true humility and how does this show that we are close to God.
We know that we are created by God and how we look and our personality was determined from God. God determines which spiritual gifts we have. Which spiritual gifts we have does not make us any better than anyone else. It determines the role that we are to play while living down here. It is not us that truly determines who we are (Although through our free we can live out our life as a fake thinking one thing when really is another). WE must cherish how God made us.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.James 1:17 and 18
What does this have to do with humility. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines humility as
the quality or state of not thinking you are better than other people : the quality or state of being humble
How can we be humble if we don’t know who we are. As a Christian we are not to compare us to other people but to the design God created for us. Sit back sometime and think of who we are and how God created us. It is truly awesome. Cherish it. Don’t worry about other people when doing this. Just contemplate God, His personality and those trait He gave you.
Lets look at some people from the Bible
(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.) Numbers 12:3
Some people look at this as tongue and cheek. After all Moses wrote this about himself. How can he be humble bragging about his humbleness. When ones look at the situation how can one not be humble. On one side of Moses, he is talking face to face with a holy and just God. One that has infinite wisdom, power and knowledge. On the other side was an Israelite nation that seemed to rebel against him many times. How can you feel superior.
It was like Job telling his friends that if he was able to have an audience with God he could be vindicated of all his wrongs that he was suffering for. When God showed up and reminded Job of who He is, Job changed his attitude and immediately humbled himself. Job was never told why this happened. At the beginning of the book it states that Job redeemed himself through all the sacrifices that he did. It was from his actions he was saved. At the end it showed a different type of relationship with God. A relationship based on knowing who God really is and who he is. A closeness developed that wasn’t there before. What a humbling experience.
The ultimate in humility was Jesus being God. He came to earth as a human. As he grew up, he relied on fellow humans for sustenance, food and fellowship. He knew he could count on his Father up in heaven but lived with humans as a human. He already knew what it what like to be a human because He is God and knew everything. He needed to show people that he experienced what normal people experiences and even more. He was the perfect sacrifice coming from humble beginnings. He is now our advocate praying for us continually. In a sense praying is a humble experience because one is asking for assistance one way or another. Even though Jesus is God he still aligns Himself with God the Father.
There are other instances of even despicable people humbling themselves. Through that humility they find favor with God. There was Manassas, Ahab and the whole city of Nineveh as examples. There was Hezekiah who tried to follow God. He as an acts of bragging by showing visitors all he had, eventually made Judah lose everything.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other Gal 5:22 to 5:26
Here it mentions that we shall exhibit the fruits spirit without conceit. In 1 Corinthians it talks about using the spiritual gifts to build up the body. We are to exhibit Christ characteristics boldly , but not as a means to show that one is better than the other. It other words display your relationship with God in a humble manner.
I am only touching the this subject. A book could be written on humbleness. True humbleness is hard to come by.
